FAQ
How will the registration process work?
Teams are comprised of 3–4 people.
Each team member must register individually.
If registering as part of a team (3–4 people or a pair), please ensure you use the same team name.
If registering as an individual for a composite team, enter “N/A” in the team name field.
Do I need to be an IOP member to join the preliminary competition?
No, IOP members can register for free, non-members must pay a £15 fee and can opt to become an IOP member for a year as well.
You must be a bachelor’s or master’s student at a UK or Irish university.
Where can I register for the UK & Ireland preliminaries?
Register here! Make sure your whole team uses the same team name when registering. Each team member has to register separately as we need their individual consent to the code of conduct. If they use a different team name (or a variation) then it becomes difficult to assign the teams correctly.
What course can I be on?
PLANCKS is a competition for undergraduate and Masters students, so anyone studying a BSc or MSc (or variation thereof e.g. MSci).
It is a competition for physics students, however (as per the IAPS regulations), this encompasses physics related subjects. Feel free to contact us if you want clarification on what degree course counts.
PhD students are encouraged to contact us to get involved with making / marking the exam!

Can the team members change after registration?
Yes, this is possible only if we are informed as soon as possible and have approved the change.
My teammates cancelled, what can I do?
Inform us about your situation as soon as possible, and we will aim to help you.
How long does the competition last?
The exam lasts 4 hours.
However, the event itself runs over multiple days with guest lectures, academic & cultural events and socials.

What material can I use during the competition?

Will a certificate of participation be issued?
Yes, each participant will receive a participation certificate.
What if need to be alone or chill-out?
We have a chill-out room that you can use if you want a quiet space or some alone time. Just mention it to a OC member and they can let you in.
Can specific dietary requirements be requested?
Yes, please let us know on the registration page.
Should I bring a reusable water bottle?
Water will be provided during meals, however, you are encouraged to bring your own water bottle.
Will there be a dress code?
No, but please be mindful of other participants. All participants have agreed to follow the IOP and IAPS codes of conduct.
Do I need to bring food with me?
Some meals will be covered; you are encouraged to feed yourself during breaks. The campus offers many locations that sell food.
You are allowed to eat during the competition, please be mindful of your fellow participants (NO NUTS).
